‘We should have got at least a point there …’

What you might call a goal fest. A strong first half, in which the boys went 2-0 up, followed by a running out of steam, where we let Onslow back into a game we should have won.

After some initial Onslow pressure, Jonathan Bt burst through with a superb run which saw him lob the ball just over the bar. It was a sign of things to come. On ten minutes, in-form Scott calmly shot home from the edge of the area after good pressure, 1-0. At the back Theo was in imperious form and we went 2-0 up with a magnificent Rupert free kick into the top left-hand corner. Then it was Onslow who broke clear, only for Mike in goal to pull off a super reflex save. He did the same thing soon afterwards – only this time he caught it for good measure.

Disappointingly, not long before half-time Onslow pulled one back, and it gave them the fillip they needed to come out fighting in the second half, when they equalised practically straight away, while our boys were still digesting their mango juice. Nevertheless we battled away, with Man of the Match Richard in inspired form, tackling and spraying passes all over the field. Next, Rupert sending a scorcher just over the bar, only for a slip up at the back to let Onslow into the lead for the first time, 2-3.

Still the boys fought, but they were beginning to be overrun in midfield, putting a lot of pressure on the back four. Nevertheless the cool and collected Steve beautifully set up a superb Rupert breakaway, from which he made no mistake, 3-3. We couldn’t hold on though, and Onslow went 3-4 and then 3-5 up, through hesitation at the back. Eddie pulled one back to make it 4-5, but it was a frustrating result.
